This series of brightly colored polychrome sculptures is inspired by my lifelong interest in historic and contemporary architecture.
The works are made from wood and start as raw blocks or sheets of hardwood. Each element was fabricated by hand using basic tools, saws and common woodworking tools. Some of the sculptures incorporate pieces made from cast graphite/plaster, carved wood and metal elements. The absorbent wood surfaces were painted with artists’ grade oil colors and allowed to dry to a natural matte finish.
The works in this series are spontaneous creations that begin life as drawings or sketches. Simple elements grow organically as the work progresses. Either wall mounted, floor standing or placed on a specifically designed and fabricated basses. The works are often shown as thematically related groups: Buildings, fragments, bridges and cities. Notions about place, cultural identity and role of architecture in daily life are important to the series.
Making 3-D art is a path I have found to incorporate my interest in painting with physical objects that create thier own shadows, convey a sense of scale and expressive mood.
Architecture is the art form we encounter daily. In many ways it defines us, underpins our cultures and tells profound stories about the collective “we”.
